Venus vTokens: redeeming versus selling a receipt

A Venus vToken represents a supplied-asset position. Redeeming it through Venus and selling it to another market participant are different operations. One uses the lending protocol's conversion and account rules; the other needs a counterparty willing to buy that exact receipt.

Venus's protocol math guide explains that vToken quantities convert into underlying amounts through an exchange rate, with deployment-specific decimals. The number of vTokens alone is therefore not the number of underlying coins available to withdraw.

Normalize a comparison

Suppose a hypothetical receipt balance is 250 units and the current conversion is 0.024 underlying tokens per receipt. Its calculated underlying amount is 6 tokens. A market quote of 5.9 underlying tokens should be compared with that 6-token reference, not with the number 250.

Use the current market's parameters. Venus explicitly warns against transferring a vBNB example, decimal assumption or rate convention to another deployment. This matters when the same application serves several pools and chains.

Account and market conditions still apply

The vToken technical reference distinguishes supply, redemption, borrowing and repayment. A position involved in a borrowing account cannot be treated as an isolated bag of freely disposable tokens without checking the protocol's collateral rules and available liquidity.

A DEX route is not guaranteed merely because a vToken implements a familiar token interface. Verify whether there is an executable route for that specific receipt. If there is none, the proper next question is how the protocol supports redemption, not which unrelated token with a similar name to select.

Keep receipt units and underlying units in separate columns in your records. This prevents a changing exchange rate from looking like missing tokens and makes a redemption result comparable with a secondary-market quote.
