Liquidity & price impact

Why liquidity outside the current range cannot fill your next swap

Explain why an out-of-range position can hold valuable tokens without supplying liquidity at the current swap price.

Capital outside the current trading range can belong to a pool without contributing to the next small swap at the current price. That is why total balances and immediately active depth can tell different stories.

Read the range relative to price

Suppose a hypothetical position supplies liquidity only while the quoted price lies between 0.90 and 0.95. If the current price is 1.00, that position is outside its range. Its token holdings may still have market value, but they do not provide the same local execution support as a position spanning 1.00.

Uniswap describes this distinction as active versus inactive liquidity. Price moving back into a position's range can make it relevant again.

Ask whether your trade reaches the range

Inactive does not mean permanently unusable. A sufficiently large trade can move the pool toward another range, changing which positions contribute along the path. The relevant question is what liquidity exists between the starting price and the trade's stopping point.

A current active-liquidity number therefore describes the immediate neighborhood, while a large-trade quote must account for the later ranges it traverses. Neither a single local number nor total TVL alone answers both questions.

Use the distinction in a comparison

Imagine two pools with equal hypothetical TVL. If one has most capital outside the requested execution path, its headline size can overstate support for that trade. Obtain a quote for the actual amount and inspect the range distribution when available.

Do not describe inactive capital as missing or stolen simply because it does not improve the current quote. Nor should a large inactive balance be counted as immediate depth at the current rate. A clear liquidity assessment states the current price, the relevant direction, the ranges encountered and the capacity available within the user's chosen execution constraint.
