Price impact warning: when a smaller swap is the safer diagnostic

A price-impact warning means the proposed trade size may move the route’s execution price substantially. A wider slippage setting does not reduce that effect; it only changes what deterioration you permit after the quote.

Perform a quote-only comparison

Without signing anything, compare the original amount with a smaller amount using the same token contracts and network. Look at output per input unit, not just the total output. If the smaller quote is materially better per unit, size relative to the available route is a likely contributor.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not a recommendation to execute many small transactions. Multiple swaps add fees and encounter changing prices; splitting cannot be assumed to preserve the first quote for every piece.

Check whether the route itself is plausible

Confirm the token identity, route availability and any transfer deductions. MetaMask explains that its swap quotes depend on sufficient underlying liquidity. A recognizable ticker does not establish that a particular contract has meaningful tradable depth.

Use an independently sourced price reference only as a comparison. A stale reference, a bridged asset or a different token contract can make an apparent discount misleading. The amount you can actually receive is the relevant execution fact.

If the quote still offers an unacceptable result, do not dismiss the warning simply to reach the confirmation screen. Save the quote details if you need support to explain routing. A route that technically executes can still be economically poor for the size you chose.
