Wrapping and unwrapping BNB

Convert between native BNB and WBNB without confusing a one-for-one wrapper operation with a market trade or cross-chain transfer.

Wrapping BNB deposits native BNB into the WBNB contract and gives the account corresponding WBNB token units. Unwrapping performs the reverse conversion. This wrapper operation is different from trading BNB against another asset at a market price.

BNB Chain identifies the BSC WBNB contract as 0xbb4CdB9CBd36B01bD1cBaEBF2De08d9173bc095c and describes its deposit and withdrawal operations. Native BNB and this token belong to the same network, but appear as separate balances.

What a direct conversion should show

ActionAsset changeSeparate expense
Wrap 0.2 BNB0.2 native BNB becomes 0.2 WBNBTransaction gas
Unwrap 0.2 WBNB0.2 WBNB becomes 0.2 native BNBTransaction gas

These amounts are an illustrative example of the wrapper relationship. The total native balance change includes the fee. If an interface proposes a liquidity-pool route, price impact or an unexpected conversion rate for canonical BNB/WBNB, determine whether it is offering a market trade instead of the direct wrapper operation.

Why WBNB appears inside ordinary swaps

WBNB provides a token interface usable by applications that expect contract-based assets. A router can incorporate wrapping or unwrapping into its execution. Consequently, internal WBNB transfers do not by themselves mean the user selected WBNB as the final output.

Judge the result by the receiving account's final balance changes. If the purpose was to obtain gas, check that native BNB increased. A WBNB balance alone does not accomplish that goal.

Leave gas available before wrapping

A direct unwrap is itself an on-chain operation. An account holding only WBNB can therefore need a small native BNB funding transfer or a specifically supported sponsorship route before it can unwrap. Avoid turning the entire usable gas reserve into a token just to prepare a routine swap.

Neither wrapping direction changes chains. WBNB on BSC does not become an Ethereum asset because another network uses a similar wrapper name.
