Routing & execution

More liquidity sources do not always mean a better quote

Explain why a long supported-DEX list is only one input to execution quality and why redundant sources may add little.

Source coverage describes which venues a router can consider. Route quality describes the result it produces for a particular request. Broader coverage can help, but the number of listed sources does not directly measure useful execution capacity.

A source must contribute a usable alternative

Imagine an aggregator adding ten pools that have negligible liquidity for the requested pair. Its coverage count rises, but the best route may remain unchanged. Adding one deep, competitively priced market could matter much more.

Several access providers can also expose the same underlying pool. Counting each provider as entirely new liquidity double-counts a shared market. The relevant unit is the executable opportunity and its actual state.

0x's introduction describes aggregation of heterogeneous sources. Uniswap's routing code shows that supported pools still pass through candidate-selection decisions.

Coverage has several dimensions

A provider can support a chain without supporting every venue on that chain. It can integrate a venue without supporting every pool type or token behavior. It can recognize a pool yet exclude it from a particular route search.

These distinctions explain why a marketing source list is not an execution guarantee for every pair.

More alternatives need correct evaluation

New sources help only if their quotes are timely, correctly modeled and compatible with the proposed settlement. A stale or incorrectly normalized quote can look attractive without improving a real trade.

The useful evaluation fixes asset identities, amount, mode and observation conditions, then inspects the resulting executable terms. Source coverage helps explain differences between results; it does not replace the comparison itself.

When two services return the same route despite different source counts, both may simply have found the same strongest option in the relevant market. That is compatible with their coverage differences and does not by itself establish a defect.
