Why quotes on different chains are not equivalent offers

Explain why the same ticker and amount on different networks do not automatically represent interchangeable swap offers.

Two swap quotes on different chains describe different delivery locations. They are not interchangeable offers merely because the token symbols and numerical amounts match. Your input balance, destination and any transfer between networks are part of the task.

Asset identity includes its environment

A contract address is interpreted on a particular network. A token with the same name elsewhere can be a native issuance, a bridged representation or an unrelated asset. The quote must identify the actual input and output contracts in that environment.

Ethereum's bridge guide explains why moving value between networks requires an additional mechanism. The ERC-20 standard provides token-interface conventions, not a guarantee that matching symbols on independent chains represent one shared balance.

A hypothetical comparison

Assume your A balance is on Network One. A screen on Network Two shows more B for the same numerical A input. To use that offer, you first need the correct A on Network Two or a service that fulfills the cross-chain outcome.

The extra delivery process can introduce time, charges and different settlement conditions. Ignoring it compares a feasible local action with an action whose starting resources you do not yet have.

Define the required endpoint

If B is needed by an application on Network One, receiving B on Network Two does not complete the same task. A higher numerical receipt can therefore be less useful even before calculating transfer costs.

Keep four location fields when the networks differ: source chain, source asset, destination chain and destination asset. Then distinguish same-chain route selection from cross-chain delivery.

This does not mean comparing chains is pointless. It means the comparison must include the complete workflow required to reach a common final state. A local swap quote is one component of that workflow, not automatically its total result.

For ordinary aggregator comparisons, holding the chain fixed removes this ambiguity and lets the analysis focus on routes that can actually consume the same starting balance.
