Does adding liquidity necessarily improve a swap's exchange rate?

Adding balanced liquidity can improve execution for a finite trade without changing the initial local price. “Better liquidity” and “higher token price” are separate claims.

A proportional deposit example

Assume a hypothetical fee-free constant-product pool starts with 10,000 units of each token. A 100-unit input returns about 99.009901 output. A proportional deposit doubles both reserves to 20,000. The starting ratio remains one-for-one, while the same input now returns about 99.502488.

The improvement comes from the trade being smaller relative to reserves. The deposit did not itself require a change in the ratio defining the starting local price.

Identify what was actually added

Uniswap's pool documentation describes proportional deposits into an existing v2 pool. A transaction labeled liquidity provision can have surrounding swaps or other operations, so do not assign every associated price move to the deposit alone.

In concentrated pools, where the new range lies matters. Capital outside the trade path may increase total holdings without improving that specific quote.

Measure the result directly

Compare the same requested amount before and after the addition, with fee treatment and price reference stated. If the spot price also moved, separate that change from the improvement attributable to depth.

More output after an addition can reflect both effects. Less impact relative to the new local price is stronger evidence of deeper execution at that size than a raw output increase alone.

The example assumes no intervening trades, no fees and a full-range constant-product curve. Real comparisons require actual state observations. The useful question for a swapper is how the addition changes the receiving amount and total cost of the intended transaction, not whether a larger TVL number should mechanically imply a rising token valuation.
