Why a wallet's dollar value is a poor execution benchmark

Explain why a wallet dollar balance can change after a swap even when the received token quantity matches the quote.

A wallet's dollar display values holdings using a price source. It does not necessarily show what those holdings could be sold for at their full size. A value change after a swap can therefore reflect valuation timing or price-source differences rather than a missing token amount.

Reconcile quantities first

Imagine a hypothetical quote estimates 100 tokens and the recipient receives exactly 100. The swap interface values them at $2 each, while the wallet uses $1.95. The interface shows $200 and the wallet shows $195, but the five-dollar display difference is not evidence that five dollars of tokens disappeared.

That does not establish that either valuation is economically realizable. A sale of all 100 tokens might produce still another amount, depending on the executable market.

Distinguish a reference from an offer

Uniswap's pricing documentation distinguishes a local mid price from the average price of a particular trade. Multiplying a balance by a displayed reference can overlook fees and size effects.

For an execution review, compare received quantities with the accepted quote. For a valuation review, compare price sources and timestamps. For liquidation value, obtain a quote for the actual quantity while keeping separate costs visible.

Check common accounting mismatches

  • The wallet and swap screen may update at different times.
  • One screen may identify a different token contract or network despite a similar ticker.
  • A rounded display can conceal a small quantity difference.
  • The balance may include other transfers, rewards or changes unrelated to the swap.

If the token amount is also lower, investigate that quantity difference rather than dismissing it as a display issue. Conversely, if the quantity matches, do not label the entire fiat-value gap a swap fee. State which comparison you completed and which price assumption remains uncertain. A transaction receipt and token balance changes provide a firmer starting point than two dollar screenshots.
