Fees & trade costs

Reconcile a quote, a receipt and wallet balance changes

Reconcile a completed swap across accepted quote, transaction costs and token balances before attributing a discrepancy.

Reconcile a completed swap in three passes: token quantities, separate network payments, then valuation. Starting with the wallet's dollar display mixes all three and can turn a price-source difference into a supposed missing-token problem.

Pass one: match the asset movements

Record the exact input and output token contracts, the input actually spent and the output actually received by the intended address. Compare those quantities with the accepted quote using the same fee boundary. Account for other transfers in the same transaction or observation period.

ERC-20's balance and transfer conventions provide the starting evidence for standard-token movements. A route's intermediate transfer is not automatically the recipient's final balance increase.

Pass two: add independent payments

Suppose a hypothetical accepted quote estimated 500 output tokens, final receipt is 499.5, and separate fees are 0.001 native tokens. The execution quantity discrepancy is 0.5 output tokens. The native fee is another cost, not part of that 0.5-token difference.

Include paid setup and failed attempts if the report concerns the full task. Reconcile each transaction rather than treating all wallet balance movement as the swap's fee.

Pass three: apply one valuation method

If the output is valued at $2 and native token at $300 in this illustrative calculation, the quantity difference is $1 and the separate native cost is $0.30. A different wallet price feed can alter the displayed totals without changing either quantity.

Use the narrowest supported conclusion

If quantity matches but dollar value differs, report a valuation discrepancy. If quantity differs and fee inclusion is unclear, report an unresolved settlement or disclosure discrepancy. If a quote cannot be matched to the executed request, do not label a precise slippage amount.

Preserve the accepted quote and receipts so the explanation remains verifiable. A complete reconciliation should explain where value moved without assuming that every unexplained difference is a hidden fee or a routing failure.
