Fees & trade costs

Convert swap costs into basis points without losing the denominator

Translate swap costs into basis points with explicit denominators and a worked example that separates fee rates from economic shortfall.

A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. To express a swap cost in basis points, divide its value by the chosen trade-value denominator and multiply by 10,000. Write down that denominator; a precise number with an unstated base is difficult to compare.

Convert an actual amount

Suppose a hypothetical swap spends $2,500 of input and has $6.25 of separately paid transaction costs. The separate-cost ratio is 6.25 / 2,500 × 10,000 = 25 basis points, or 0.25%. If the same $6.25 accompanies a $250 swap, the ratio becomes 250 basis points, or 2.5%.

This calculation says nothing about the exchange rate received. If the output is worth $2,487.50 at a stated reference price, the benchmark-to-output gap is another $12.50. Total economic shortfall becomes $18.75, or 75 basis points of input value. Do not call this a 75-basis-point platform fee: most of it is a comparison against a benchmark.

Keep rate changes distinct

A fee falling from 30 basis points to 20 basis points falls by 10 basis points. Its relative reduction is one third. Saying it fell by 10% would describe a different calculation. Likewise, 0.5% slippage is 50 basis points, not five.

The meaning of a displayed rate still matters. Uniswap's fee documentation distinguishes different fee categories and recipients. A percentage attached to one category cannot stand in for every cost of execution.

Report the denominator alongside the result

Use input value for an input-budget comparison, acquired quantity for a cost-per-output-unit comparison, or another explicitly named base. Avoid averaging percentages from differently sized trades without weights. A $10 trade and a $10,000 trade should not contribute equally to an aggregate cost ratio unless you intentionally want the average experience per trade. Preserve unrounded amounts and round only the reported result.
